Relating ions concentration variations to conductivity variations in a sequencing batch reactor operated for enhanced biological phosphorus removal

In this paper a deterministic relationship between ionic conductivity and phosphorus concentration variations in an enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process is established. Conductivity shows a strong correlation with phosphorus in both anaerobic and aerobic stages, increasing or decreasing when phosphorus is released or taken up, respectively. Since the end of these processes can be detected by examining the conductivity profile in a cycle, useful information on the EBPR performance and stability is available. Single particle jumps and correlated ionic motions in glass-ceramics

Using impedance spectroscopy, the ion transport in poorly Li-conducting aluminosilicate glass ceramics and their precursor glasses has been measured for temperatures 50 K < T < 550 K and covering a frequency range of more than 14 decades from 10 mHz up to 3 THz. In addition to the familiar cooperative ionic motion dominating at high temperatures, for the first time dielectric relaxation due to elementary hopping processes is observed well below room temperature.

Dielectric Dispersion and Ion Conductivity in High-Pressure LixNaw1-xNbO3Solid Solutions

Thermal behaviour and dispersion of dielectric permeability and thermal behaviour of conductivity measured in ferroelectric ceramic solid solutions of Li x Na 1−x NbO 3 (x = 0.17, 0.25) synthesized at high pressure and possessing extended region of homogeneity are reported. The Li x Na 1−x NbO 3 (x = 0.17, 0.25) solid solutions of perovskite structure are found to be super-ionic conductors at rather low temperatures O ≥ 400 K. Dielectric dispersion and anomalous behaviour of dielectric permeability are observed in the thermal range of super-ionic conductivity corresponding to structural transformations in the high-pressure solid solutions.

Several types of lithium ion conducting polymer electrolytes have been synthesized by hot-pressing homogeneous mixtures of the components, namely, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as the polymer matrix, lithium trifluoromethane sulfonate (LiCF{sub 3}SO{sub 3}), and lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF{sub 4}), respectively, as the lithium salt, and lithium gamma-aluminate {gamma}-LiAlO{sub 2}, as a ceramic filler. First principles calculations of oxygen vacancy formation and migration in mixed conducting Ba0.5Sr0.5Co1−yFeyO3−δ perovskites

Abstract First-principles supercell calculations of oxygen vacancies in the Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 1− y Fe y O 3− δ (BSCF) perovskites are presented. The density of states is determined for different iron content and oxygen vacancy concentrations, and the characteristic differences for Co and Fe are discussed. We analyze the dependences of the defect (oxygen vacancy) formation and migration energies on the Fe content and compare the calculated properties with those of related LaCoO 3 and LaFeO 3 perovskites.
Solid proton conductors as room-temperature gas sensors

Ammonia-exchanged ceramic samples of beta alumina have been obtained from plasma-dispersed powders. The ionic conductivity is slightly affected by ion exchange, but the surface conductivity for the amonia-exchanged sample drastically changes in the presence of the water and ammonia vapours. The ammonia-doped xerogel of antimonic acid hydrate in the form of a thick film has been tested as a potentiometric ammonia sensor.

Ionic and ion diffusion-controlled thermally stimulated relaxation (TSR) processes in CaF 2 , BaF 2 and LiBaF 3 crystals (X-ray irradiated at 290 K) have been investigated by means of ionic conductivity and the correlated ionic thermally stimulated depolarisation current (TSDC), and radiation-induced optical absorption band thermal bleaching techniques at 290-650 K. It was found that under a DC field fluorides store large ionic space-charge. In CaF 2 , BaF 2 and LiBaF 3 , by using the ionic TSDC technique we were able to detect a series of the interstitial anion and/or anion vacancy delocalisation stages in the extrinsic ionic conductivity region. Electric properties of KTiOPO4and NaTiOPO4from temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction

Single crystals of KTiOPO4(KTP) and NaTiOPO4(NaTP) show pronounced pyroelectric behaviour. In order to determine the origin of this property on an atomic scale, X-ray diffraction measurements have been carried out at several temperatures between 100 and 600 K. Modelling of the electron density and the evolution of the structure as a function of temperature has enabled the determination of values for the spontaneous polarization of the compounds and the pyroelectric coefficient of KTP, principally due to the alkaline-ion displacements with a value of 2.0 nC cm−2 K−1. Effect of sodium to barium substitution on the space charge implementation in thermally poled glasses for nonlinear optical applications

Thermally poled niobium borophosphate glasses in the system 0.55(0.95-y) NaPO{sub 3}+y/2 Ba(PO{sub 3}){sub 2}+0.05Na{sub 2}B{sub 4}O{sub 7})+0.45Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5} were investigated for second order optical nonlinear (SON) properties. Bulk glasses were studied by Raman spectroscopy, thermal analysis, optical and dielectric measurements. The sodium to barium substitution does not lead to significant changes in optical properties, crystallization of glasses and coordination environment of polarizable niobium atoms.
